Scale length is the nominal vibrating length used to place the frets. A guitar saddle is intentionally moved beyond that nominal point for intonation compensation, so measuring directly from nut to saddle can produce a confusing result.

The reliable measurement

Measure from the fretboard-side witness point of the nut to the centre of the 12th fret. Double that distance. A 12.75-inch measurement indicates a 25.5-inch nominal scale.

Use the centre of the fret crown, not the front or back edge. Keep the rule aligned with the string path.

Why saddles differ

Fretting stretches a string. A saddle is moved back to compensate for that increase in pitch. Different strings need different amounts, so a six-saddle bridge presents six slightly different nut-to-saddle lengths.

Those compensated lengths are not six different scale specifications on a normal straight-fret guitar.

Multiscale instruments

For fret layout, use the intended nominal design value rather than a compensated saddle measurement. For intonation work, measure actual saddle positions separately. Keeping these values under distinct labels prevents a correct number from being used for the wrong task.

Work through three common measurement cases

On a typical 25.5-inch electric, the nut-to-12th-fret reading should be close to 12.75 inches. Saddles will sit slightly beyond another 12.75 inches because the fretted string needs compensation. Record the nominal value as 25.5 inches and keep per-string saddle distances in a separate setup field.

On a 24.75-inch instrument, expect about 12.375 inches to the 12th fret. A catalog name may round a historical or manufacturer-specific value, so use the actual fret measurement when comparing tension on the guitar in hand. Do not force the reading to match a familiar model label.

On a 25.5–27-inch multiscale, measure approximately 12.75 inches on the treble path and 13.5 inches on the bass path, then double each. Intermediate strings require their own lengths. The neutral fret describes fan placement and should not be substituted for an average scale.

Repeat any surprising measurement in millimetres and convert it independently. Agreement between two careful readings is more useful than choosing the value closest to a catalog number, especially on modified, vintage, or handmade instruments.
